Frequently asked questions

Everything about shopping, selling, and how we classify and verify genuine vintage clothing across Australia.

Shopping

Buying vintage on the site

Do I buy directly through VintageClothing.com.au?+
Yes — buying happens entirely on VintageClothing.com.au. On any product page, click "Enquire to Buy" and send a short message with your details; we pass it straight to the seller, and they reply directly to arrange payment and postage. We're building toward full on-site checkout so the whole purchase can happen without leaving the site — for now, the seller confirms and completes the sale with you directly.
Is it free to browse and shop?+
Yes, browsing, filtering and searching the directory is completely free for shoppers. We make money from seller listing fees and promotions, not from buyers.
What's the difference between "Genuine Vintage," "Retro" and "Pre-Loved"?+
Genuine Vintage means the item is at least 20 years old (manufactured 2006 or earlier, as of 2026) — the same threshold Etsy uses. Retro / Vintage Inspired means newly made clothing styled to look like an earlier decade. Pre-Loved means good quality second-hand clothing that isn't old enough to count as genuine vintage. Read the full explanation in our classification guide.
What happens if an item doesn't match its listing?+
Every product page has a "Report this listing" link. Since final payment and postage are arranged directly between you and the seller once they reply to your enquiry, disputes are handled under that seller's own returns policy — but reported listings are reviewed and can affect a seller's verification status on our directory.
Can I filter by size, decade or location?+
Yes — the Shop Vintage page lets you filter by decade, department, clothing type, size, style, brand, colour, condition, price and seller location, plus whether the seller is online-only or has a physical store.
Selling & listings

For vintage businesses and individuals

How much does it cost to list my business?+
Listing is free to start. A Free Listing gets your business name, category, suburb, short description and one link on the directory. A Featured Listing ($39/month) adds a full profile, multiple images, priority placement, an enquiry form and visitor stats. See the full breakdown on our Sell Vintage Clothing page.
Can I list markets, fairs and pop-up events?+
Yes, event listings are free for verified businesses. Every event automatically moves to our past-events archive once its date passes, so the Markets & Events page never looks out of date.
Can individuals sell their own clothes, not just businesses?+
Yes — the same listing form on our Sell Vintage Clothing page works for both. Choose "I'm selling my own item(s)" instead of "I run a vintage business" and you'll only be asked for what's relevant to you. Our selling guides can help you identify, measure and price your pieces first.
How do I get the "Verified Australian Seller" badge?+
Verification is part of the Featured Listing sign-up process. We confirm the business is genuinely Australian-based and review the accuracy of stock descriptions and condition grading before granting the badge.
Will you eventually process payments for sellers?+
That's Stage Three of our roadmap. Buying and enquiring already happen on our site — full on-site checkout and seller payouts are the next big step, once demand is proven at scale. Read more on our About Us page.
Trust & classification

How we keep listings honest

How is "genuine vintage" actually verified?+
Sellers provide an estimated decade or year of manufacture along with photos of labels, care tags and construction details that support that estimate. We may request further evidence for high-value or disputed items.
What is your condition grading scale?+
We use five tiers: New Old Stock / Deadstock, Excellent, Very Good, Good, and Fair / Restoration Required. Every listing states its grade rather than a vague description like "good used condition." Full definitions are in our condition grading guide.
What if I disagree with an item's classification?+
Use the "Report this listing" link on the product page. Our team reviews disputed classifications against the photos and description provided, and can require a seller to correct or reclassify a listing.
Do you check every single listing manually?+
Featured and verified sellers go through profile-level review when they sign up. Individual and free listings rely on accurate seller disclosure backed by our reporting system — if something looks off, use the "Report this listing" link and we'll review it.
Account & general

Everything else

Do I need an account to browse the site?+
No — shopping, browsing stores, reading guides and checking events is completely open. An account is only needed if you're listing a vintage business.
Is VintageClothing.com.au only for Australia?+
Yes, we're deliberately Australian-first. Every business and seller in our directory is verified as genuinely Australian-based — no overseas drop-shipping.
